Without this adapter or AutoAuth credentials, scan tools attempting to communicate with FCA vehicles equipped with an SGM will display errors such as:

“Device unable to communicate with the control unit.”

🔒 What is a Security Gateway Module (SGM)?

Starting in 2018, FCA began installing SGMs in most of their vehicles as a cybersecurity measure. While it protects the vehicle network, it also blocks aftermarket scan tools from sending commands or performing service functions — unless bypassed.

Estimated SGM Implementation by Model Year:

• 2017: ~20% of vehicles

• 2018: ~50% of vehicles

• 2019: ~90% of vehicles

• 2020+: ~100% of vehicles

• 2017 and earlier FCA vehicles generally do not have SGW.

• 2018 model year onward: SGW became the standard across nearly every FCA/Stellantis brand, though some overlap years (like Ram DS “Classic” trucks) had mixed configurations.

• Even commercial and fleet models (ProMaster, ProMaster City) eventually received SGW after 2019.
