Sound familiar?

  • You bled the brakes properly and the pedal is still soft or sinking
  • You replaced an ABS module, master cylinder or hard line and now the pedal is wrong
  • The system ran dry and pulled air into the hydraulic unit
  • You have bled it three times and gotten nowhere
  • A shop says it needs a scan tool to finish the job you already paid parts for

Why this happens

A conventional bleed pushes fluid from the master cylinder, through the lines, out at the calipers. That works fine for air sitting in a line or a caliper. It does not work for air trapped inside the ABS hydraulic modulator.

The modulator is full of small chambers and solenoid valves that are closed during normal driving. Air sitting behind a closed valve cannot be pushed out by pedal pressure, because the fluid simply flows around it. You can bleed until the fluid runs clear and still have a soft pedal.

The fix is to command the ABS pump and solenoids to cycle while you bleed, so the trapped air is forced out of those chambers and into the lines where normal bleeding can remove it. That takes a bidirectional scan tool. A basic code reader cannot do it.

What you need to know before you bleed

Never let the reservoir run dry during the procedure. The ABS pump moves fluid fast, and if it pulls air you are starting over with more air in the worst possible place. Keep the reservoir topped up throughout, use fresh fluid of the correct specification, follow the bleed sequence for your vehicle, and have a helper or a pressure bleeder. Brakes are not something to gamble with. If the pedal is still wrong afterwards, stop and diagnose rather than driving it.

How the ABS bleed works with the UCAN-II-D Pro

  1. Top up the reservoir with fresh fluid and get the car safely supported.
  2. Plug the scanner into the OBD2 port and run a full system scan.
  3. Open the control unit list, select the ABS or ESP control unit, and read its fault memory.
  4. Perform a conventional bleed at each corner first, in the sequence specified for your vehicle.
  5. Run the ABS bleeding procedure so the pump and solenoids cycle, keeping the reservoir topped up the whole time.
  6. Repeat the conventional bleed at each corner to clear the air the procedure released.
  7. Clear the fault memory and confirm a firm pedal before the car moves.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work on my car?
ABS bleeding is supported across a wide range of European, Asian and American makes. Coverage varies by model, year and module, so if you are unsure, contact us before you buy.

Do I always need an ABS bleed?
No. For a routine pad change or a simple fluid flush where the system never ran dry, a conventional bleed is usually enough. You need this when air has gotten into the hydraulic unit.

Can I do it alone?
It is far easier with a helper or a pressure bleeder, because the reservoir must never run dry while the pump is cycling.

Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once and updates are free.

What if it doesn't work for me?
You have 31 days from delivery to return it, and US return shipping is free.
