Sound familiar?
- A DPF or exhaust filter warning on the dash that will not clear
- The truck or van has dropped into limp mode with reduced power
- The car does mostly short trips and never gets hot enough to regenerate on its own
- You have done the "drive it on the highway" advice and it did not work
- A dealer wants the vehicle for a day to push a button
Why this happens
A diesel particulate filter traps soot. Normally the engine burns that soot off by itself during a passive regeneration, which needs sustained exhaust temperature, usually from a decent run at speed. Short trips, cold weather and stop start driving never get there.
As soot load climbs, the ECU first tries harder on its own, then warns you, then protects the engine by cutting power. Once it is in that state, driving around often will not fix it, because the ECU will not start a regeneration while certain faults or conditions are present.
A forced or stationary regeneration is where a scan tool commands the ECU to run the burn off deliberately, while the vehicle sits. A basic code reader cannot do it.
What you need to know before you regenerate
This gets genuinely hot and it is not a repair. Run it outdoors, well away from anything flammable, never in a closed garage, with the engine at operating temperature and enough fuel in the tank. Do not interrupt it once started. And a regen does not fix what filled the filter: a leaking injector, a failed EGR, a turbo problem or a bad sensor will load it right back up. Scan first and fix the cause. A filter that is cracked or full of ash needs replacing, not burning.
How forced regeneration works with the UCAN-II-D Pro
- Park outdoors with clear space around the exhaust, engine at operating temperature, with adequate fuel.
- Plug the scanner into the OBD2 port and run a full system scan.
- Open the control unit list, select the engine control unit, and read its fault memory.
- Repair any fault that would cause excess soot before going further.
- Check live data for soot load and exhaust temperature so you know where you are starting from.
- Run DPF Regeneration and let it complete without interruption.
- Confirm soot load has dropped, clear the fault memory and road test.

Frequently asked questions
Will this work on my vehicle?
DPF regeneration is supported across many diesel makes and models, including vans and light trucks. Coverage varies by model, year and module, so if you are unsure, contact us before you buy.
Is this a DPF delete?
No, and we do not sell one. This runs the regeneration the vehicle is designed to perform, on a working emissions system.
How long does it take?
It varies by vehicle and soot load, but plan on sitting with it rather than starting it and walking away.
It loaded up again a month later. Why?
Something is making excess soot, or the driving pattern never allows a passive regen. Scan it and treat the cause, not the symptom.
Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once and updates are free.
What if it doesn't work for me?
You have 31 days from delivery to return it, and US return shipping is free.
