Sound familiar?

  • The car is already on jack stands and you have just realised the rear pistons will not wind back
  • Your car has a button instead of a handbrake lever, so the caliper has a motor on it
  • A parking brake malfunction message appeared after you touched the rear brakes
  • You were told to drive it to a shop to have the pads you already bought fitted
  • You are worried about forcing the piston and wrecking a caliper you just paid for

Why this happens

On a traditional caliper you wind or push the piston back and get on with it. On a car with an electronic parking brake, the rear calipers have an electric actuator motor that drives the piston out to hold the car. That motor has to be commanded to retract, and the brake module has to know you are servicing the car rather than losing pressure.

That command only comes from a scan tool. There is no pedal sequence, no fuse trick that is safe, and no way around it on most cars. This is the single most common reason a straightforward DIY brake job stops dead halfway through.

It affects a huge range of vehicles, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, Land Rover, Ford, GM and many Asian models.

What you need to know before you start

Do not force the piston. Driving an EPB piston back mechanically can strip the actuator gearbox and turn a pad change into a caliper replacement. Put the car into service mode first, do the work, then exit service mode and let the system recalibrate before you drive it. And service mode is not a repair for a seized caliper or a dead actuator motor, so scan the car first and read what is actually stored.

How EPB service mode works with the UCAN-II-D Pro

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels and switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  2. Plug the scanner into the OBD2 port and run a full system scan.
  3. Open the control unit list, select the parking brake or brake control unit, and read its fault memory.
  4. Run EPB Service Mode to retract the rear actuators.
  5. Replace the pads and rotors, then reassemble.
  6. Exit service mode so the actuators extend and the system recalibrates.
  7. Clear the fault memory and confirm the parking brake holds before you drive.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work on my car?
EPB service mode is supported across a wide range of makes including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, Land Rover, Ford, GM and many Asian models. Coverage varies by model, year and module, so if you are unsure, contact us before you buy.

Can I just pull a fuse or use a wind back tool?
No. On an electric caliper the piston is driven by a motor and gearbox. Forcing it is how people end up buying calipers.

Do I need the tool again to finish?
Yes, to exit service mode and let the system recalibrate. That is part of why owning one beats borrowing one.

My parking brake light is on already.
Scan it first. Service mode retracts a working system. It does not repair a failed actuator or a wiring fault.

Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once and updates are free.

What if it doesn't work for me?
You have 31 days from delivery to return it, and US return shipping is free.
