Sound familiar?
- A cluster message counting down: AdBlue: 20 starts remaining, then 19, then 18
- No Restart Possible in X Starts or Refill AdBlue, See Owner's Manual
- You already topped off the DEF tank and the countdown kept going
- The countdown is getting low and you are worried the car will not start at all
- A dealer wants the car for a day just to clear a counter
Why this happens
BlueTEC diesels use an SCR system that injects AdBlue, also called DEF, into the exhaust to cut NOx emissions. Federal emissions rules require the car to enforce this, so when the system detects low DEF or a fault it starts a countdown of remaining engine starts. When that counter reaches zero, the engine will not restart.
Here is the part that catches people out: on many of these cars, refilling the tank alone does not always clear the countdown. The counter is stored in a control module and has to be reset with a scan tool that can talk to that module. A basic code reader cannot do it.
What you need to know before you reset
A reset is not a repair. If the countdown was triggered by an actual SCR fault, such as a failed NOx sensor, a bad DEF pump, a clogged injector or a heater circuit problem, resetting the counter only buys you time. The warning will come back. Run a full system scan first, read the stored codes, and fix the underlying fault. Reset the counter once the system is actually healthy.
How the reset works with the UCAN-II-D Pro
If you have used Xentry, this will feel familiar. The UCAN-II-D Pro follows the same menu path: you pick the control unit, read its fault memory, then work from the adaptation menu.
- Fill the AdBlue tank properly with fresh, in date DEF fluid.
- Plug the scanner into the OBD2 port under the dash and switch the ignition on.
- Run a full system scan and read the emissions and SCR related codes, not just the countdown.
- Repair anything the scan turns up before going further.
- Open the control unit list and select the SCR or AdBlue control unit, then read its fault memory.
- Open Adaptations and run the AdBlue and DEF reset.
- Clear the fault memory, cycle the ignition and confirm the countdown message is gone.

Frequently asked questions
Will this work on my car?
The AdBlue countdown affects BlueTEC diesel models across the E, GL, GLK, ML, R and S families, as well as the Sprinter. If your car shows a starts remaining message, the UCAN-II-D Pro can read the system and run the reset. Not sure? Contact us before you buy.
I already use Xentry. Why would I want this?
The menu path is the same, so there is nothing new to learn. This is the tool you can leave in the car, hand to a colleague, or use without tying up a laptop and a licence.
My countdown already hit zero. Is it too late?
Once the counter reaches zero the engine will not restart, and that usually means a tow. This is exactly why it is worth acting while you still have starts left.
Will this delete my emissions system?
No, and that is deliberate. This resets the counter on a working system. It is not a delete or a defeat device, and we do not sell one.
Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once and updates are free.
What if it doesn't work for me?
You have 31 days from delivery to return it, and US return shipping is free.
