Sound familiar?

  • A red "Brake Visit Workshop" or "Brake Defective, Stop Vehicle" message on the dash
  • Fault code C249F: the SBC hydraulic unit has reached its operating limit
  • Fault code C2498 or related SBC warnings stored in the brake module
  • A shop quoting you a full SBC unit replacement before checking anything

Why this happens

Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) is the electro hydraulic "brake by wire" system Mercedes used on these cars. The SBC unit keeps an internal counter of how many times it has operated. When that counter hits its preset limit, the module flags C249F and warns you to visit a workshop, often even when the brakes still feel normal.

On many cars the fix for that specific warning is a counter reset, which requires a scan tool that can talk to the SBC module. A basic code reader cannot do it.

What you need to know before you reset

A reset is not a repair. It clears the counter warning. It does not fix a pump that is physically worn, leaking or failing. If you have other SBC faults alongside C249F, a soft or unusual pedal, or the warning returns soon after resetting, get the hydraulic unit inspected. Brakes are not something to gamble with.

How the reset works with the UCAN-II-D Pro

If you have used Xentry, this will feel familiar. The UCAN-II-D Pro follows the same menu path: you pick the control unit, read its fault memory, then work from the adaptation menu.

  1. Plug the scanner into the OBD2 port under the dash and switch the ignition on.
  2. Select your Mercedes and run a full system scan to see every stored fault, not just SBC.
  3. Open the control unit list and select the SBC brake control unit.
  4. Read the fault memory and confirm C249F is stored.
  5. Open Adaptations and run the SBC counter reset.
  6. Clear the fault memory, cycle the ignition and confirm the warning is gone.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work on my car?
SBC is found on the W211 E-Class, W219 CLS and R230 SL. If your car has SBC, the UCAN-II-D Pro supports the counter reset. Not sure? Contact us before you buy.

I already use Xentry. Why would I want this?
The menu path is the same, so there is nothing new to learn. This is the tool you can leave in the car, hand to a colleague, or use without tying up a laptop and a licence.

Does the reset fix my brakes?
It clears the counter warning. If the pump itself is failing, it needs inspection or replacement. The full system scan helps you tell the difference.

Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once and updates are free.

What if it doesn't work for me?
You have 31 days from delivery to return it, and US return shipping is free.
