Sound familiar?

  • Harsh or clunky shifts, especially the 2 to 3 change or on downshifts
  • The engine flares between gears before the next one catches
  • You just did a fluid and filter service and the shifting got worse, not better
  • You replaced a conductor plate or valve body and the transmission still behaves badly
  • A delay when selecting drive or reverse

Why this happens

A modern automatic does not shift the same way at 150,000 miles as it did new. The transmission control module continuously adapts, learning the fill pressures and timing each clutch pack needs as the friction material wears and the fluid ages. Those learned values are stored in the module.

The problem comes when the hardware changes but the learned values do not. Fresh fluid has different friction properties than the old fluid the module adapted to. A new valve body or conductor plate behaves differently than the worn one it replaced. The module keeps applying corrections for parts that are no longer there, and the result is harsh engagement, flaring, or shifts landing in the wrong place.

Resetting the adaptations wipes those learned values so the module relearns against the hardware that is actually in the car. On Mercedes this is a well known fix on the 722.9 seven speed. A basic code reader cannot do it.

What you need to know before you reset

A reset is not a rebuild. If the clutches are worn out, the conductor plate has failed, or the fluid is burnt, clearing the adaptations will make it feel different for a few days and then come right back, sometimes worse. Scan the transmission and read what is stored first. Expect a relearn period of normal mixed driving afterwards, and do not judge the result on the first drive.

How the adaptation reset works with the UCAN-II-D Pro

On Mercedes, if you have used Xentry this will feel familiar. The UCAN-II-D Pro follows the same menu path: you pick the control unit, read its fault memory, then work from the adaptation menu.

  1. Make sure the fluid level and condition are correct and the transmission is at operating temperature.
  2. Plug the scanner into the OBD2 port and run a full system scan.
  3. Open the control unit list, select the transmission control unit, and read its fault memory.
  4. Fix any stored fault before resetting anything.
  5. Run Transmission Adaptation to clear the learned values.
  6. Clear the fault memory, then drive a normal mixed cycle so the module can relearn.

Frequently asked questions

Will this work on my car?
Transmission adaptation is supported across many European, Asian and American makes, and is a well known procedure on the Mercedes 722.9. Coverage varies by model, year and module, so if you are unsure, contact us before you buy.

How long before it feels right?
Give it a normal mixed driving cycle. The module needs a range of loads and speeds to relearn, so it may feel odd at first.

Should I reset after every fluid change?
It is commonly done as part of a fluid and filter service, because the new fluid behaves differently from what the module adapted to.

My transmission slips. Will this fix it?
No. Slipping usually means wear or a hydraulic fault. Diagnose it before resetting anything.

Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once and updates are free.

What if it doesn't work for me?
You have 31 days from delivery to return it, and US return shipping is free.
