Is The UCAN-I The Right Scanner For You?
Yes, if you want to read and clear check engine codes, watch live engine data and check emissions readiness on your own cars. It covers the engine and emissions system, which is what the check engine light reports on.
Step up to the UCAN-II Pro if you need ABS, airbag, transmission or body module codes, manufacturer specific codes, bidirectional tests, battery registration, oil and brake resets, or coding. The UCAN-I does not read those systems. Most owners start here and upgrade when a job calls for it.
How To Use It
- Find the OBD2 port. It is under the dash on the driver's side, usually within a foot of the steering column, on every 1996 and newer car sold in the US.
- Plug in the UCAN-I. It powers up from the port; there are no batteries.
- Turn the key to ON without starting the engine, or start the engine for live data.
- Choose Read Codes. Each code appears with its definition. Write the code down or photograph the screen before you clear it.
- Look up the code at youcanic.com for the common causes and the fix, or email it to support@youcanic.com and a technician will point you in the right direction.
- After the repair, choose Erase Codes to turn off the light, then drive normally and recheck I/M readiness before an emissions test.
Pass The Emissions Test The First Time
An emissions station fails a car for two reasons: a stored code, or readiness monitors that have not completed since the codes were last cleared. The UCAN-I shows you both before you drive to the station. If a monitor reads Not Ready, drive the car another few days and check again, and you avoid paying for a retest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it work on my car?
If the car was sold in the US as a 1996 or newer model, yes. OBD2 has been required on every gasoline car and light truck since 1996 and every diesel since 2008. Vehicles sold in Europe and Asia adopted it a few years later; email support@youcanic.com with the year and model if you are unsure.
Will it tell me what to fix?
It tells you the code and what the code means, for example P0420, catalyst efficiency below threshold. The cause behind that code can be one of several things, and the free guides at youcanic.com walk through the common ones for each code. Our support technicians can also help by email.
Does it read ABS, airbag or transmission codes?
No. The UCAN-I reads the engine and emissions system through the standard OBD2 protocol. For every other module, bidirectional tests and service resets, the UCAN-II Pro is the tool.
Will clearing the code fix the problem?
No. Clearing turns off the light and resets the readiness monitors. If the fault is still there the light will come back, usually within a few drive cycles. Clear codes after you fix the cause, not before an emissions test.
Do I need updates or an app?
No. There is nothing to download, pair or renew. Generic OBD2 codes are standardized across every manufacturer, so the reader keeps working on new model years.
Can I leave it plugged in?
It draws a small current from the port. Unplug it when you are done, especially if the car sits for days at a time.
