Rebuilt S400 Hybrid A/C Compressor, The Part That Keeps Your Hybrid Battery Cool
On the S400 Hybrid the air conditioning does two jobs: it cools the cabin and it cools the high voltage battery. When the electric compressor fails, the cabin gets warm and the battery starts running hot, and a hot lithium ion battery ages fast. A warm cabin on an S400 Hybrid can come from the compressor itself, from a refrigerant leak, from the compressor's control electronics, or from a hybrid system fault that shut the compressor down to protect the battery. Scan the car before you order: compressor faults are stored in the A/C control unit and in the hybrid system. Why This Compressor Matters More Than Cold Air
A normal A/C compressor runs off the engine belt, so it stops whenever the engine stops. The S400 Hybrid shuts its engine off at stops and in traffic, and its lithium ion battery needs cooling whether the engine is running or not. Mercedes solved that with an electric compressor powered by the hybrid high voltage system. It runs whenever the battery asks for cooling, engine on or off.
That makes the compressor part of the battery's life support. Lithium ion cells age with heat. An S400 driven through a summer with a dead compressor is cooking a battery that costs $2,450 to replace. Fixing the compressor is the cheap repair; waiting turns it into the expensive one.
This is why we tell every battery customer to have the A/C system recharged and working after the install, and why a weak compressor should be replaced at the same time as the battery, not after it.

Used S400 compressors sell online for about the same money as this one, untested, with a warranty that ends when the marketplace's 30 day protection ends. Installation Notes
- • High voltage. The compressor is powered by the hybrid high voltage system through the orange cables. Disable the hybrid system and confirm zero voltage before you disconnect anything. Insulated gloves. If you are not trained for high voltage work, have a shop do it or bring the car to us.
- • Use electric compressor oil only. Electric compressors need a non conductive oil made for them. Standard PAG oil is conductive; it damages the motor insulation and causes high voltage isolation faults that shut the hybrid system down. If the system was ever topped up with PAG oil, flush it before installing this compressor.
- • If the old compressor failed internally (noise, seizure, metal in the lines), flush the condenser and lines and replace the receiver drier. Debris from the old unit will destroy the new one and is not covered.
- • Evacuate and recharge to the specified R134a charge, and verify the hybrid battery temperature comes down with the A/C running.
- • Scan afterward. Clear the stored A/C and hybrid codes and confirm the compressor runs on command. The UCAN-II Pro reads the S400 A/C and hybrid control units. If the car asks for a coding step, call us with the compressor in the car and we will walk you through it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know it is the compressor and not the battery or the power electronic module?
Read the codes. Compressor faults are stored in the A/C control unit and show up in the hybrid system as a cooling fault. Warm A/C with no battery warnings points here. Battery temperature or capacity faults with a working compressor point to the battery; inverter or converter faults point to the power electronic module. If the picture is mixed, email us the codes and VIN before ordering.
Can I keep driving with a dead compressor?
The car will drive, but the hybrid battery has no cooling. In warm weather that shortens battery life quickly and can trigger hybrid faults. Fix it before the next hot month.
Will a regular S400 or S550 belt driven compressor fit?
No. The hybrid uses an electric compressor on the high voltage system. The belt driven compressor from a non hybrid W221 does not mount, does not connect and would not cool the battery.
What oil does it take?
A non conductive oil made for electric compressors, the type the compressor makers specify for hybrid and electric vehicles. Never standard PAG oil. Your A/C shop will know the difference; if they do not, call us.
Does it need coding?
Most installs are plug in, evacuate, recharge and clear codes. If your car asks for a coding step, call us with the compressor in the car and we will walk you through it.
Do I need to send my old compressor back?
Contact us before you order if you have a core to return; we will tell you the current arrangement.
Does the price include installation?
No. $450 is for the compressor only, shipped to you or picked up in Towson. Installation at our Baltimore shop is a separate service with its own quote; call 1-888-959-4265.
How does a warranty claim work?
Email or call with your order number and the codes. We confirm the failure with you, you ship the compressor back to Baltimore, and we send a replacement. Labor and return shipping are the only costs not covered.
