Fiat Diagnostic Scanners and Adapters

A US market Fiat is an FCA car under the skin: the 500, 500L and 500X sit in the same coverage database as the Chrysler, Dodge, RAM and Jeep models, with the same module names and the same Security Gateway rule from 2018. The parts store code reader sees the PCM and stops there, which is why a Fiat with an ABS, airbag or transmission light so often ends up at the dealer. The tools below are what we use in our own shop in Maryland to reach every module on a Fiat, bleed the brakes with the ABS pump cycling, relearn the transmission after a fluid service and set the body options. The database lists the FF 500 from 2012, and the BF 500L and FB 500X from the 2016 model list. Pick by what you need to do, then check the adapter rule by model year.

Service Functions By Job On A Fiat

On the tablet you pick the control unit, then the function category, then the routine. These are the routines the coverage database lists for the FCA family the Fiat belongs to, grouped by the job you are doing, under the category the database calls Special Func. Names are as they appear on the tablet. Coverage varies by model and year, so check yours before you order.

What The Scanner Sees On A Fiat

Two 2022 vehicles pulled from the shared FCA coverage database, with the control units the UCAN-II Pro lists on each. Every unit gets fault codes, live data and, where the database shows it, active tests, configuration data and special functions.

Both samples are Jeeps because the US Fiats share the FCA database and its module naming; a 500 or 500X carries fewer units than a Wagoneer, and the coverage checker shows the exact list for your year.

Symptom, Then The Routine That Fixes It

• Spongy pedal after a caliper, line or ABS hydraulic unit replacement: Bleed brakes ABS only, 2WD or 4WD in the ABS module, which cycles the valves while you bleed.
• Harsh or hunting shifts after a transmission fluid service or a rebuild: Quicklearn: NOT_RFE in the TCM, then Torque converter clutch (TCC) break in on a fresh converter.
• High idle or a throttle code after a new throttle body or a cleaning: Learn electronic throttle control (ETC) in the PCM.
• Speedometer and shift points off after a tire or wheel size change: Program tire size.
• Airbag light after a passenger seat, seat track or occupant sensor repair: Occupant classification module (OCM) system verification test.
• Tire pressure light after new sensors: program the U360 sensor to the old ID from the tablet, or trigger and relearn through the WCM/TPMS or TPM module.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a 2019 Fiat 500X. What do I need?

The UCAN-II Pro with the FCA 12+8 adapter that comes in its box. The 2018 and newer 500X has the Security Gateway Module, and without the adapter a scan tool reads codes and little else. Plug the adapter in behind the gateway and every module answers.

Does my 2014 Fiat 500 Abarth need an adapter?

No. The 2012 to 2017 Fiat 500 has no Security Gateway, so the UCAN-II Pro plugs straight into the 16 pin port and reaches every module the database lists for the FF 500.

Can it bleed the ABS on my Fiat 500L after a brake line?

Yes. Bleed brakes ABS only, 2WD and 4WD sit in the ABS module's Special Func menu, and the routine cycles the hydraulic unit while you work the bleeders. The ABS bleeding guide walks through it.

Does it program Fiat keys or flash modules?

No. Key programming and module flashing need the FCA server through wiTECH. The UCAN-II Pro does diagnosis, live data, active tests, body configuration and the service functions listed above.

Is a European Fiat such as a Ducato or a Panda covered?

Yes, through a separate European Fiat database on the same scanner, with configuration and active test functions. Check your exact model on the coverage checker because the function set differs from the US cars.
