RAM Diagnostic Scanners and Adapters

A RAM truck lives in the FCA database next to Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler, which means the same long module list, the same Security Gateway on 2018 and newer trucks, and the same Quicklearn and brake bleeding routines that keep a shop from sending the truck to the dealer. The tools below are what we use in our own shop in Maryland to reach every module on a Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 or 5500 and on a ProMaster, run the relearns after a transmission, brake or body repair, and command the components the dealer charges an hour of labor to test. The coverage database lists the DS and DT Ram 1500, DJ Ram 2500, D2 Ram 3500, the DD and DF cab chassis, the DP Ram 4500 and 5500, the VF ProMaster and VM ProMaster City, and the DR Dodge Ram of 2006. Which Scanner Do I Need For A RAM?

Service Functions By Job On A RAM

On the tablet you pick the control unit, then the function category, then the routine. FCA splits the categories into Special Func (the service routines), Active Test (bidirectional tests), ECU Configure Information, Event Data and Mis-fire Data. These are the routines the coverage database lists for the FCA trucks, grouped by the job you are doing. Names are as they appear on the tablet. Coverage varies by platform, engine and year, so check yours before you order.

What The Scanner Sees On A RAM

Two vehicles pulled from the coverage database, with the control units the UCAN-II Pro lists on each. Every unit gets fault codes, live data and, where the database shows it, active tests and special functions.

The database samples its FCA module sets on a Wagoneer and a Cherokee; the RAM trucks sit in the same database with the same module families and the same special function list, so the counts are representative. Before 2004 the database lists ABS, ECM, ORC, PCM and TCM on the FCA trucks.

Symptom, Then The Routine That Fixes It

• Harsh or delayed shifts after a transmission fluid and filter service, a solenoid pack or a rebuild on a 68RFE or 66RFE: Quicklearn (RFE) in the TCM, then Torque converter clutch (TCC) break-in if the converter was replaced.
• Spongy pedal after a caliper, brake line or ABS unit replacement: Bleed brakes 2WD, Bleed brakes 4WD or Bleed brakes ABS only in the ABS module.
• Speedometer and ABS off after a lift kit or taller tires: Program tire size in the ABS module.
• Throttle lamp or a stall after a throttle body cleaning or a battery change: Learn electronic throttle control (ETC) in the PCM.
• Trailer lights dead with the harness checked: Trailer tow relay outputs in the body module, to command each output and watch the live data.
• Seat or mirror memory lost after a battery disconnect: Standardization routine and Drive all motors in the memory seat module.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the 12+8 adapter for my 2020 Ram 1500?

Yes. Every 2018 and newer RAM has the Security Gateway Module, and without the adapter the scanner sees engine codes and little else. The FCA 12+8 adapter comes in the UCAN-II Pro box; plug it in behind the gateway under the dash and every module answers.

Will it do the Quicklearn on my 2500 after a 68RFE rebuild?

Yes. Quicklearn (RFE) and Quicklearn: NOT_RFE are in the TCM special functions, with Torque converter clutch (TCC) break-in and Clear variable line pressure (VLP) counters next to them. The transmission adaptation guide walks through the order.

Can it bleed the ABS on my Ram 3500 after I replaced the hydraulic control unit?

Yes. Bleed brakes 2WD, Bleed brakes 4WD and Bleed brakes ABS only are in the ABS module's special functions. The ABS bleeding guide covers the pedal and valve sequence.

Does it program keys or flash modules on a RAM?

No. Key, fob and module programming need the FCA server through wiTECH. The UCAN-II Pro does diagnosis, live data, active tests and the special functions listed above.

Can I rent it for one job?

Yes. The rental is a one week rental plus a refundable deposit that comes back when the scanner does, shipped free both ways. The rental kit does not include the 12+8 adapter, so on a 2018 or newer truck add the adapter to the order and keep it. Most RAM renters want a Quicklearn, a brake bleed or an airbag light cleared.
